Christie, Booker Call For Rail Improvements

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and U.S. Senator Cory Booker want the federal government to help pay for needed improvements to the rail system.

They’re asking for federal funding to build two new rail tunnels.  During a press conference on Wednesday, they invited Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao to visit the area to see the aging infrastructure for herself.

“She needs to see the project that we all agreed upon during the Obama Administration which is a significant improvement over projects that have been proposed in the past,” Christie said.

There have been a series of incidents involving trains in the New York City area in recent weeks.  A derailment in early April led to cancellations and delays for four days at Penn Station.  Then last Friday, a disabled train caused more delays for commuters.

“We’re teetering every single day on the brink of truly a traffic Armageddon, because should these trains fall our region becomes crippled,” Booker said.
