Retired Officer Arrested for Shooting

A retired NYPD officer has been arrested after allegedly shooting his landlord’s boyfriend in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn.

Police said 51-year-old Gene Barrett shot 45-year-old Joseph Stepinski outside a home on Greenpoint Avenue.  It’s unclear exactly what led up to the shooting.

As police arrived on the scene, Barrett fled inside the home and began a standoff with officers.  He surrendered after about an hour.

Barrett left the NYPD on disability in 2002.

Stepinski is hospitalized in critical condition at Bellevue Hospital.
