The FDNY debuted a new piece of firefighting equipment while fighting a 4 alarm blaze in Corona Park yesterday.
The FDNY Incident Commander used a drone with a mounted camera to fly over the blaze at the 6th story apartment building, using the visual information to instruct firefighters where to direct their attentions first.
The live feed from the 8-pound drone transmits Hi-Def and Infrared signals to a remote a station that detects hot spots and dangerous areas that could possibly injure firefighters.
The Director of Operations for the FDNY Timothy Herlocker said, the drone shows personnel exactly where to chop open roof vents and where to apply water first.
