Mayor Bill de Blasio says New York City Public Schools will likely be open on Friday.
Winter Storm Niko brought heavy snow to the Northeast Thursday, forcing the city to cancel school.
But with the precipitation expected to stop in the afternoon, de Blasio said the city expects to have enough time to clear roads and sidewalks for school Friday.
A Winter Storm Warning was in effect for a large part of the Tri-state area through Thursday evening. People were advised to stay at home if at all possible.
Snow began falling after midnight and became heavy mid-morning on Thursday.
The mayor said he expected between 10 and 14 inches to fall on the five boroughs.
