At least three tornadoes have touched down in southern Louisiana, including one that damaged an east New Orleans community that was among those devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
Storm chasers and civilians captured video of the storms and shared them on social media.
Multiple tornado warnings were issued by the National Weather Service, reports the Washington Post.
So far, five people have been admitted to New Orleans East Hospital with storm-related injuries.
New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu called the damage "substantial" and reported that dozens were hurt, with most injuries considered minor.
There were no reports of deaths or missing people, though approximately 10,000 homes were without power Tuesday.
