Governor Andrew Cuomo says the State of New York is due to legalize recreational marijuana.
"Let's legalize the adult use of recreational marijuana once and for all," he said Monday during a speech in which he announced his plans for the first 100 days of 2019.
It's still unclear what the timeline for legalization would be.
Cuomo's statement is the first time he's publicly and officially supported legalization.
In the past, Cuomo has called marijuana a "gateway drug" and said he wasn't convinced it should be legal for all adults.
But the New York Times reported in July that Cuomo acknowledged his opinion on the subject was changing.
Cuomo won a third term as governor of New York this past November. When his third term begins, he will be backed by a Democrat-controlled state legislature likely to support a bill to legalize recreational pot.
Cuomo's counterpart in New Jersey, Gov. Phil Murphy, has made legalizing marijuana a priority in the Garden State.
