Meta Rolls Back Controversial Feature After Harsh Criticism

Last week Meta announced a new AI image generating feature coming to Instagram that would allow users to submit the likeness of anybody with a public Instagram profile by just tagging their profile in the tool. While there was a way to opt out of your account being used in this manner, it still caused a big outcry against the feature. Rich DeMuro, host of ‘Rich on Tech’ on WOR Sunday nights, spoke with Curtis Sliwa and Larry Mendte in the Morning about Meta’s surprising decision to roll back their feature.

“This is pretty wild and something we rarely see from a big tech company,” DeMuro told hosts Sliwa and Mendte. “Most of the time when they come out with new features they say ‘Hey this is what we’re doing, this is the new way of the world, and you can deal with it’ but for Meta this is a pretty big about face.”

DeMuro explained what caused Meta to change their minds: “Everyone piled on with the complaints, SAG-AFTRA, talent studios, pretty much everyone in the public that had an Instagram account said ‘Hey, hold on, shouldn’t we have to opt in to this?’ and Meta, after just a few days I cannot believe it actually said you know what this feature missed the mark and we’re going to take it down.”
