The first debate in the race to be mayor of New York City takes place tonight at Rockefeller Center. New Jerseyans, however, are well past the debate stage in the race to crown a governor, as the last of the two scheduled gubernatorial debates between Democrat Mikie Sherrill and GOP challenger Jack Ciattarelli happened days ago. Now is the time to focus on the polls, which, for the most part, show a close race with less than three weeks until Election Day. Ciattarelli appeared on 710 WOR’s Mendte in the Morning program to discuss the race in New Jersey as time grows tight on the other side of the Hudson.

Ciattarelli told host Larry Mendte he’s been around the block enough times in the race for Trenton that he knows not to listen to the doom-and-gloom that a few of the polls convey: “The ones that have me behind are most times the university polls which don’t invest their money. It’s more of a survey than a poll, but those had me down by maybe six points or seven points- the same ones that had Kamala Harris winning the state last year by twenty and had me down last time by twelve with a couple of weeks ago. All the other polls that are more credible have this as a dead heat or me with a one- or two-point lead. We’re not taking anything for granted. I’ll finish strong over the last eighteen days, and we’ll deliver a win.”

Ciattarelli also discussed his campaign’s intent to sue Sherrill for defamation; he said he was apoplectic at some of the accusations her camp flung at him regarding opioids: “The New York Post and New York Times reported (Wednesday) that the very companies that she’s accusing me of being in bed with, she was taking money from. She took campaign contributions from the very companies she’s accusing me of colluding with, so again, this is recklessness, it’s irresponsible, it’s defamatory, and we’ll be filing suit.”
