The political climate has been slowly building up to a boil for a long time and it has culminated in the last few months with multiple targeted attacks, some fatal, on elected officials and other political figures including the recent assassination of Charlie Kirk. This has garnered calls from both sides to calm down the rhetoric around politics in hopes of avoiding more attacks in the future. Nicole Malliotakis, U.S. Congresswoman representing Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn, spoke with Mendte in the Morning about the current state of the nation.

“We can never be a nation where people are afraid to speak their view,” Malliotakis told host Larry Mendte. “This is a country where freedom of speech is fundamental to our nation.”

Malliotakis believes we need to be careful we don’t make the same mistake as other countries: “People cannot fear for their lives when they’re discussing issues that affect national policy; you see this happening in other countries, and look at their forms of government, look how destroyed their countries are.”
