On July 13th 2024 Donald Trump was holding a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania when he was shot at by a gunman attempting to assassinate him. The bullet shot at Trump narrowly missed his head, and after the gunman was shot, the questions became how he was able to get into position to shoot at the President. Don Mihalek, ABC News Law Enforcement contributor and retired senior Secret Service agent, spoke with Mendte in the Morning about the mistakes that nearly led to Donald Trump’s assassination.

“Broadly speaking the Secret Service should have done a better job of managing and establishing command of the site,” Mihalek told host Larry Mendte. “Theres a bunch of reasons why that didn’t happen; I think a bunch of them are legacy issues with the agency.”

Mihalek explained what some of those issues are: “A lot of the failures that went on at Butler… are issues within the agency that were overdue to be addressed because of the expanded mission the agency has, the personnel issues the agency’s been grappling with, and trying to establish and use newer technologies.”
