Randall's Island Migrant Shelter To Close

Mayor Eric Adams says an easing of the migrant crisis in New York City is allowing them to close the shelter on Randall's Island by the end of February.

“We’re not out of the woods yet, but make no mistake, thanks in large part to our smart management strategies and successful advocacy, we have turned the corner on this crisis," Adams said.

He credits the limit on shelter stays in the city and new rules put into place by President Biden at the border. There are currently about 60,000 migrants staying at city shelters, which is a 15 percent decrease from the beginning of the year.

"With 14 straight weeks of lower numbers of new arrivals seeking asylum, we are now able to transition from this large humanitarian relief center, which is a step in the right direction," Deputy Mayor Anne Williams-Isom said.
