Hurricane Helene devastated a number of cities and communities in the southeastern region of the United States, but few have been affected as badly as Asheville, North Carolina. 710 WOR’s Len Berman and Michael Riedel in the Morning spoke with ABC News Correspondent Jim Ryan about some of the destruction (some of which Riedel saw firsthand) and the recovery efforts in that area.
The people of Asheville are currently without running water and the work to get that basic need restored will be difficult. “It’s going to be some time, because they almost have to start from scratch because many of the supply pipers were broken,” Ryan told Riedel and morning news anchor Larry Mendte, who was filling in for Berman.
With much of the existing system washed away in the storm, Asheville is having to look elsewhere which brings along its own issues. “They are having to borrow valves and pipes and parts from eastern North Carolina, trucking them over, and of course the roads are in terrible shape,” Ryan explained.
