With a memorable 8-7 win over the Atlanta Braves yesterday afternoon, the New York Mets clinched a postseason berth. The Mets, who were 22-33 on May 29th, have had the best record in all of Major League Baseball since June 1st and will play the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 1 of the National League Wild Card tonight at 5:30 p.m.
Newsday’s New York Mets beat writer Tim Healey joined 710 WOR’s Len Berman and Michael Riedel in the Morning to talk about the Mets and their chances of advancing in the postseason. “This playoff field, the National League in particular, is as wide open as it has been in any year in recent memory,” Healey told Berman and Riedel.
Despite a full team effort, Healey believes credit for the Mets success is due to the leadership. “It probably starts at the top, David Stearns who is their President of Baseball Operations, and Carlos Mendoza who’s the manager.”
“There were a lot of sneaky good signings in the winter by the front office, there were a lot of big moments naturally over the course of this season including several points where the Mets looked dead in the water.” Healey added.
