Borelli On Adams Indictment: "I Don't Believe In Coincidences"

Most of New York City woke up to the jaw-dropping news that Mayor Eric Admas was handed a federal indictment for campaign contributions late last night. It makes him the first mayor in the Big Apple’s history to be indicted of a crime. Sadly, the indictment has been followed by the inevitable growing chorus of calls for Adams to resign now. City Council Minority Leader Joe Borelli (R-51st) says he isn’t putting much stock in that, however, even though he has also said he might consider running if Adams does leave Gracie Mansion. Speaking on 710 WOR’s Len Berman and Michael Riedel in the Morning program, Borelli says only two people can dictate what the mayor does next: the mayor himself and Governor Kathy Hochul.

“You know, a lot of people are calling for his resignation at this point,” Borelli reminded Berman and Larry Mendte, sitting in for Riedel. “I’ll point out, though, most of those people are from the far left. These are people who wanted him to resign because he wasn’t treating the migrants well enough [and] he wasn’t building enough bike lanes. I don’t really put too much credence in what they have to say. The person who matters in this is Kathy Hochul, because if she believes that he can’t continue to execute his duties, she does have the power to remove him. She has been a little prudent on these types of situations in the past, but what she does, no one knows.”

And while Borelli has been critical of the mayor at times, he does have empathy for him regarding the timing of all the raids. “The fact that the police commissioner’s home was raided a week after he gets hired by the mayor over a twenty-year-old document, the fact that the campaign staffer’s home gets raided the day Adams is going to the White House to tell Biden to go shove it on migrants- I don’t believe in coincidences, frankly, on this. Does that mean he's guilty on the charges, or not guilty? I have no idea, and we don’t know the extent of the evidence they have against him. I just think that suddenly, for some reason, they decided to start looking at this particular guy in all those routes.”
