Wednesday is the last day on the job for New York City Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh.
She's ending a tenure of a little less than two years, following her official appointment in October 2022. Kavanagh faced backlash from rank-and-file members because of her lack of firefighting experience. There were also lawsuits over allegations of age discrimination and fire chiefs who were demoted.
During her time as commissioner, Kavanagh fought for better regulation of e-bikes and lithium-ion batteries which have sparked an increasing number of fires across New York City.
