Lowry: DeSantis Campaign Proves Money Can't Buy You Votes

The Ron DeSantis campaign announced last week that the Florida governor has raised $20 million in campaign funds. Yet, despite raising a staggering amount of money, DeSantis has been a distant second to Donald Trump in the polls. Rich Lowry, Editor-in-Chief of the National Review, appeared on 710 WOR’s Len Berman and Michael Riedel is the Morning program to explain why, despite raising all that money and hitting most of the right notes with GOP voters, the campaign hasn’t caught fire in the polls.

“The economy and foreign policy are kind of the bread and butter of any presidential candidate,” Lowry told Berman and Riedel, “and DeSantis has not filled out a vision on that. There was a poll in a couple of states a week or so ago, asking who do you trust more on the economy, Trump or DeSantis. It was like 60-10 Trump, everywhere, and that’s because we haven’t heard from DeSantis on the economy… so I think he needs to broaden out his message and appeal.”

Even so, Lowry is not sold yet that the 2024 election will automatically be a Biden-Trump rematch. “My view might be that Trump is more likely to be his party’s nominee than Biden is to be the Democratic nominee, just because of this fact that something bad can happen at any moment… I understand why Democrats think Biden is their best shot against Trump; there’s a lot to be said for that point of view. But, just, these things we’re talking about, though, have to be factored in, and if you factor them in, maybe he’s not. Maybe Gavin Newsom is, because Gavin Newsom’s not going to trip and fall down in some gruesome way.”
