New Yorkers are still trying to sort out the chain of events that transpired Wednesday night, as Prince Harry and Megan Markle claimed that they were chased through Manhattan for two hours with the paparazzi hot on their heels. Speaking on 710 WOR’s Len Berman and Michael Riedel in the Morning program, ABC entertainment contributor Larry Hackett says he is among the growing chorus of skeptics who viewed the couple’s press release about the chase with a raised eyebrow.
“I was sympathetic to them,” Hackett told Berman and Riedel, “but every single New Yorker now looks at this and says, ‘I think they’re fibbing about this,’ because there’s no way you have a two-hour chase in New York City, so people are going to look at them more skeptically… I don’t understand what the purpose was. All it did in my mind was to make them look like they’re exaggerating and to upset the cops in New York City. Seems insane, absolutely insane.”
Hackett pointed out the disdain police had in their statement responding to the couple’s version of events. “The last people you want to upset when you come to New York are the NYPD, and what they did by releasing this report was basically saying ‘you didn’t do your job.’ Not a good look. You could hear their teeth grinding as they issued that statement.”
Hackett also offered his opinion on ABC using contestants in their 60’s on an upcoming season of the television dating show The Bachelor. “I just think it’s a genius idea. There’s lots of people north of 60 who would be interested in this, and I think it could be not only fun, but also moving. I’m sure there’s going to be lots of great stories about people’s personal lives… and I’m looking forward to watching it, however insane that might sound.”
