As migrants continue to stream into New York City, Mayor Eric Adams has been busing the overflow into neighboring counties-- but the welcome mat will not be out in Nassau. Speaking on 710 WOR’s Len Berman and Michael Riedel in the Morning program, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman says Mayor Adams can ship them “maybe to Delaware.”
“He can find a lot of sanctuary places, but Nassau County isn’t one of them,” Blakeman explained to Berman and Riedel. “We’d make sure that people had access to a nurse or a doctor, and that they had water and food for their trip out of Nassau County, but we don’t want to have people here who we don’t know who they are, they haven’t been vetted.”
Blakeman does empathize with Adams’ dilemma, but only to a point. “This is not a state problem. It is not a local problem. It is a federal problem, and the federal government could solve the problem very easily, but they choose not to, and unfortunately for Mayor Adams, he’s inheriting the policy of Bill DeBlasio, who created a sanctuary city in New York.”
Ultimately, Blakeman says the southern border must be sealed. “We need to settle the immigration issue once and for all, and I think Republicans and Democrats have to get together with a common sense plan; first seal the border, then have a guest worker program and figure out how we can bring people in legally who either want to be here because they need political asylum or they have economic reasons that they want to be here, or family reasons.”
