The New York State Senate is voting to take away a tax break that Madison Square Garden has enjoyed since the 1980’s.
The property tax exemption amounts to about $42 million a year. Senate Democrats plan to use that money to help fund the MTA.
The move comes amid controversy over the Garden’s use of facial recognition technology. It’s alleged that owner James Dolan is using the software to keep those with lawsuits against him and his venues out of the building.
It’s unclear if the state Assembly will go along with the Senate.
