Mayor Adams Announces Plan To Commit Mentally Ill New Yorkers

Mayor Adams has announced a plan to get many mentally ill New Yorkers off the streets.

He said the city would step up efforts to commit those who refuse treatment, even if they don’t pose a clear and present danger to themselves or others.

“The very nature of their illnesses keeps them from realizing they need intervention and support. Without that intervention, they remain lost and isolated from society, tormented by delusions and disordered thinking,” Mayor Adams said.

The legislative agenda will include a law that will say a person requires care when their mental illness prevents them from meeting their own basic needs. It will also allow a broader range of mental health professionals to offer assistance.
