Broadway Community Gathers To Celebrate Sondheim

Legendary Broadway composer and songwriter Stephen Sondheim was honored with a moving gathering of the Broadway community yesterday.

As snow flurries flew, a massive group gathered in the heart of Times Square to pay tribute to Sondheim by singing “Sunday” from the Sondheim play “Sunday In The Park With George.”

Yesterday's celebration was put together by actor Erich Bergen and co-presented by the Broadway League, the Times Square Alliance and Playbill. It drew the attendance of Sara Bareilles, Josh Groban, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Brian Stokes Mitchell and others.

“This felt like church,” Bareilles shared with “Variety.” “In his remembrance, we did what theater does best. We sang and raised our voices and came together in community.”

During the celebration, Miranda opened Sondheim’s “Look I Made A Hat,” an annotated anthology of the composer’s lyrics, and read from a few passages before the crowd.
