Job seekers have been forced to adapt over the past year, with most people interviewing for jobs virtually. But it seems a lot of folks aren’t realizing that they are making some huge mistakes during their virtual interviews that are likely costing the job they want.
A new UK poll, which could easily translate here, finds:
- 56% of hiring manager say they now do the majority of their job interviews via video calls.
- 42% believe such virtual interviews will continue even after COVID restrictions are lifted.
- So, what are some of the biggest mistakes job seekers are making?
- Some of the most common virtual interview faux pas include:
- Unexpected guests, like animals, or partners, joining the call
- Applicant stopping an interview to answer the door
- Bad audio
- 13% of interviewers say they’ve had a candidate stand up during the interview to reveal they were wearing sweat pants on their lower half.
- 10% have stopped an interview because of an inappropriate video call background.
- In fact, 28% of hiring managers say they’ve passed on someone because they were turned off by their video background.
- And you may want to clean up before that interview, because 58% have passed on someone because of a messy room in the background.
- Overall, 48% of hiring managers say they’d still hire an applicant if their backdrop was bad as lon as they were perfect for the job.
- 67% of hiring managers don’t think candidates consider what is in their background when on a video call.
- But that may not be totally true, with 30% of job applicants admitting they place an “object of interest” in view because it could be a talking point.
