Subway ridership is down and now a new survey from the MTA is showing that it's not just COVID that is keeping New Yorkers away.
A new survey from MTA is suggesting that NYers are more concerned about the crime and harassment happening on the subway more than before. MTA finished their quarterly survey and it displays just that, according to ABC News.
"They could not have been more clear. They said we want the system to be safe from COVID," NYC Transit interim president Sarah Feinberg said. "They now know it's safe from COVID-19, we need to make sure it's safe from crime and harassment." 33,000 MTA riders took the online survey and 87% of the respondents said that crime and harassment are important issues that are keeping them from returning to riding the subway. "We're putting our own MTA police into the system more than we ever have before," Feinberg said. "I've hired uniform security contractors, I'm putting cameras up in every station."
Of those respondents, 75% say they feel safer when a uniformed NYPD officer is on the trains, buses or subway platforms. "All I'm asking is that we pay attention to what this data is telling us act on it and help the city come back," Feinberg said.
