Legislators in New York state reached a deal to legalize recreational marijuana use early-Thursday morning.
After multiple negotiations failed, the new agreement will allow adults ages 21 and older to legally use cannabis recreationally.
The agreement will allow dispensaries to delivery of marijuana, and it will also permit consumption sights, like lounges, where customers can lawfully use cannabis. Alcohol will not be permitted at establishments where cannabis is served, reports the New York Times.
Furthermore, state residents will be allowed to grow up to six plants at home for personal use.
If approved, the first sales of cannabis could come in a little over one year.
In addition to tax revenues for the Empire State, officials hope that legalizing marijuana will mitigate racial policing in Black and Hispanic communities. The market for marijuana in New York is currently estimated at $4.6 billion. It is expected to grow exponentially over the next decade.
