The town of Swastika, New York is keeping its name.
A four-member board over the town voted unanimously to keep the name, which actually predates nazism. The founders chose the name because in sanskrit it means “well being.” The symbol was later hijacked by the Nazis.
A passing cyclist inspired the possible name change after seeing the town sign on a recent ride. The vote to keep the name came after a five-minute discussion.
Town Supervisor Jon Douglass defends the choice to keep the name. "We regret that individuals, for out of the area, that lack the knowledge of the history of our community become offended when they see the name. To the members of our community, that the board represents, it is the name that their ancestors chose."
