An Audi rigged to look like a cop car blew through the Cannonball Run record, making the trip from Los Angeles to New York in just 25-hours and 39-minutes. Drivers Arne Toman and Doug Tabbutt — they drove the 2,816 miles in 27 hours and 25 minutes last November — credit COVID-19 and their incognito wheels with their breakneck speed.
The duo took advantage of much quieter roadways during lockdown to cross the country at speeds of 175-miles an hour in a modified 2016 Audi S6 that looked like a Ford Taurus Police Interceptor from far away, Road and Track reported. Toman refashioned his Audi with a 45-gallon trunk-mounted fuel cell and a reshaped front grille with a decoy badge similar to the front of the Interceptor, the car magazine reported.
The men left the Red Ball Garage in New York City — the traditional Cannonball starting point— at 6pm. so they could cover most of the Midwest in the dark. The Audi averaged a speed of 100-mph, including the fuel stops, and hit a high of 175-mph. A network of scouts helped the team avoid police.
