Chestnut And Sudo Retain Nathan's Famous Hot Dog-Eating Titles

It wouldn’t be the 4th of July weekend without the annual Nathan's Famous Hot Dog-Eating Contest as—legend has it—the contest has been going on for over 100 years.

And by legend, I mean lie, as Nathan's promoter Mortimer Matz claims that on July 4, 1916, four immigrants held a hot dog eating contest at Nathan's Famous stand on Coney Island to settle an argument about who was the most patriotic.

In actuality the contest has been held at the original location on Coney Island most years since about 1972, usually in conjunction with Independence Day.

And it seems like since then the same people always win as—once again it was Joey Chestnut and Miki Sudo taking the male and female titles respectively.

The 36-year-old Chestnut wolfed down a world record 75 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes on Saturday to win the Mustard Yellow Belt for the 13th time in 14 years. His total broke his own record of 74, set in 2018.

Sudo, meanwhile, set a world record by eating 48.5 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes for her seventh consecutive win in the event.

With her seventh title, Sudo passed Takeru Kobayashi, who won six men's contests, and ranks second only to Chestnut.
