Thousands were expected to attend a vigil Thursday in Brooklyn, led by George Floyd's brother Terrence Floyd.
The vigil comes after protests against police brutality and racial injustice have raged nationwide for over a week. It comes one day after prosecutors upgraded charges against the former police officer who allegedly killed Floyd and announced charges against the three former officers who failed to intervene as Floyd begged for mercy and gasped for air for over 9 minutes before passing out and eventually dying.
Terrence, who has repeatedly called for peaceful demonstrations in his brother's memory, was scheduled to meet demonstrators Thursday at 1 p.m. at Brooklyn's Cadman Plaza Park. The crowd will the march across the Brooklyn Bridge, as they have on previous days.
Floyd's memorial in Minneapolis is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Eastern time.
Mayor Bill de Blasio, who has faced heavy criticism for unrest during demonstrations in the city, called the Terrence Floyd-led memorial a "moment to recognize the pain that has cause so much concern, so much of an outpouring of a deep, deep desire for change. It is also a reflection point. If we're going to make changes we have to do it together and we have to do it in peace."
