Thousands of people in the Tri-State area don't have to worry about their medical debt anymore, thanks to the congregation at the Concord Baptist Church of Christ in Bedford Stuyvesant Brooklyn.
Members of the church recently donated $35,000 to RIP Medical Debt, a New York-based charity that buys medical debt from creditors and hospitals for a fraction of the total bill.
In the hands of RIP Medical Debt, the money Concord Baptist Church donated amounted to an erasure of $4 million worth of debt, NBC New York reports.
"We could all use some good news from the things we're going through right now," Pastor Gary V. Simpson said of the joy among congregants when he announced the news Sunday.
The organization is reportedly sending thousands of yellow envelopes to residents of Brookyn and Newark, New Jersey, informing them that their onerous medical debts have been paid.
RIP Medical Debt founder Craig Antico, a former debt collections executive, said he hopes the donation gives struggling families some much-needed relief.
"It's a surprise because it's a random act of kindness," he said of the Concord Baptist Church's donation. "People can't apply for this kind of help."
The charity is currently focused on helping frontline workers and it plans to relieve $45 million in debts with the help of other donors.
