A Canadian student, majoring in operations research and financial engineering, was just named the first black valedictorian in Princeton University’s 274-year history. Nicholas Johnson took the top spot in the Class of 2020′s at the Ivy League school. In an interview, Johnson said the honor “feels empowering” and that it “holds special significance particularly given Princeton’s historical ties to the institution of slavery.” He also said he hopes “this achievement motivates and inspires younger black students, particularly those interested in STEM fields.”
