The New York Guardians defense made the Tampa Bay Vipers look absolutely terrible yesterday in the second day of the XFL’s inaugural season.
The Guardians defense took the ball away from Tampa Bay three different times—including this Jamar Summers fumble return of 13 yards early in the fourth—as New York held the Vipers to just a field goal in the 23-3 loss.
By the end, the Vipers led the Guardians in nearly every offensive category including passing yards, rushing yards, offensive plays, first downs, and third-down efficiency, but New York shined in the red zone and caused turnovers that amounted to the most important offensive stat.
But here’s the good news.
No one really saw it—at least it sure looked like that.
Because unlike Saturday’s games—that were hosted by the DC Defenders in the 20,000 seat Audi Field and the Houston Roughnecks in the 40,000 seat TDECU Stadium—the Guardians played yesterday’s game at MetLife Stadium.
And that stadium holds over 82,000—which made the 17,634 people in attendance look like specks in a sea of plastic seats. Of course, only the lower bowl was open for Sunday’s XFL game.
Meanwhile, the Defenders home game against the Seattle Dragons at Audi Field had 17,000 plus as well—making it look like a full house.
