More criticism of the state’s bail reform law, with Nassau County officials saying it led to the murder of a witness at a gang trial.
Wilmer Maldonado, 36, was found beaten to death outside a home in New Cassel. Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder the state’s bail reform law required that his identity be handed over to the defense.
“The system failed. This man’s dead because we didn’t do enough,” Ryder said.
Maldonado had allegedly been assaulted by MS-13 gang members in October 2018 and was ready to testify against them.
Governor Cuomo claims bail reform had nothing to do with this case.
