And then there was one—and that would be the Cleveland Browns who are the only team in need of a head coach—not that they haven’t been for the better part of the past decade.
This after the New York Giants finalized a deal yesterday naming New England Patriots wide receivers coach Joe Judge—I mean, did anyone else think I was going to say offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels?
And while that would seem to have made more sense—it is only until you realize Giants GM Dave Gettleman still wants a generous amount of control of the team, something he wouldn’t have with the far more hands on—and far more experienced—McDaniels.
So instead, it is the youngest of the seven known candidates mentioned for the Giants vacancy—the 38-year-old Judge who will be at the helm the team next season. Judge has a great pedigree having been mentored by Alabama coach Nick Saban and Patriots coach Bill Belichick. That’s why he comes in as a no-nonsense guy who isn't afraid to ruffle feathers with players if necessary.
Judge would replace Pat Shurmur, who was fired by the Giants on December 30 after two seasons, as the 19th coach in franchise history.
