Hundreds of women who have visited their loved ones in jail, only to be put through invasive and embarrassing searches at the hands of Correction Officers received good news today when officials from New York City agreed to pay $12.5 million to settle a class-action lawsuit.
Raymond Audain, the lawyer who represented some of the women in the lawsuit told the gothamist.com that in one of the most serious cases a client was forced to pull down her pants in front of her five-year-old daughter so the female guards could check to see if she was wearing a feminine napkin.
In the settlement's agreement, New York City does not have to admit fault or liability.
Each woman who took part in the lawsuit will be awarded approximately $4,000.
