After the last 17 minutes of a New Jersey high school football playoff game were interrupted by gunfire, the teams got the chance to finish at a neutral site: Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Philadelphia Eagles. At the end of the third quarter of the original game between Camden and Pleasantville high schools, three people were shot, one of them was 10-year-old Micah “Dew” Tennant, who died just hours before the suspended game resumed.
So when the players took the field, they did so in Micah’s honor. Camden’s bus detoured on the way to the game to stop at the hospital where he died, the game began with a moment of silence for him, and his name was written on players’ jerseys and helmets.
The game’s new venue gave the players a silver lining in the tragedy. “We’re not seeing this game as just a game,” explains Pleasantville senior Alejandro Rosado. “It’s like a fight against violence.”
