Mayor De Blasio Signs Safe Streets Bill

Mayor Bill de Blasio has signed legislation into law that advocates say will revolutionize New York City streets.

The bill will create new protected bus lanes, protected bike lanes and more pedestrian space in the city.

“Over the next two years, we will continue to lay the critical groundwork that will allow this plan to be put into motion on Day One, and we are confident that this new plan firmly cements New York City’s reputation as the nation’s leader on street safety,” de Blasio said.

The legislation also requires the city’s Department of Transportation to implement a master plan for street design every five years.

“This law helps us make alternative transportation options more viable, which is necessary in our fight against climate change,” City Council Speaker Corey Johnson said.
