Beginning on Wednesday, you’ll have to be 21-years-old to buy tobacco and e-cigarettes in New York state.
A law signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo earlier this year raising the age from 18 goes into effect.
"The goal of this law is simple - to prevent cigarettes and vaping products from getting into the hands of our youth, creating an addiction to a deadly habit,” Governor Cuomo said in a statement.
The state’s Department of Health says 40 percent of high school seniors are using e-cigarettes. Overall in high school, 27 percent of students are using vaping products.
"We are taking aggressive action to make sure the decades of progress we've made to combat tobacco addiction is not undone by a sharp rise in e-cigarette use among younger New Yorkers,” Cuomo said.
