NYC Marathoner Stoped To Help Disabled Runner Cross Finish Line

Ben Parore flew from New Zealand to New York to compete in the NYC Marathon and when he was at mile 13, he came across James Akaka, a disabled runner in a hand-cycle. Parore was trying to get him to smile for a selfie video he was making, but then Akaka pointed to the back of his hand-cycle.

Parore confirmed that Akaka, who is unable to speak, wanted help getting through the race and then finished the last half of the marathon pushing his new buddy. They crossed the finish line together and Parore says Akaka’s determination inspired him.

“The race was everything … so inspired by my Hawaiian brother I picked up halfway through the race,” Parore says. “You gave the race even more purpose for me. Much love.”
