Nationally renowned cellist Jessica Elkhatib was awarded nearly $11 million in legal recompense after a fall she sustained in the parking lot of Scarsdale, NY, market Balducci's in January of 2016.
Elkhatib slipped and fell on black ice in the gourmet grocery store's parking lot in the incident. She suffered a fractured right shoulder, a herniated disc and an injured elbow. The injuries left her unable to play the cello for more than a few minutes at a time before numbness and pain force her to stop.
"I have been intensely studying the cello since I was 10 years old, and having such a devastating injury such as this has completely changed the trajectory of my life," Elkhatib told the New York Post.
Elkhatib's lawyer Jason Paris said of the award, "It's unfortunate that our client had to wait for nearly four years, but a jury finally delivered justice. Although we understand that no amount of money can replace the quality of life she had before the accident."
