The Long Island Rail Road recently opened its new lost and found office in Pennsylvania Station.
The 1,100 square foot facility has the capability of processing the 20,000 items a year that get left behind on trains from Montauk to Penn Station.
LIRR terminal manager Steve Terracciano told the New York Post, the railroad will keep lost items on hand anywhere from three months to five years depending on the value of the lost item. And the lost items that are never claimed get sold to an outside vendor.
The most common items left behind include backpacks, umbrellas, phones, and laptop computers. Some of the strange things found on the train include a prosthetic leg, a package of medical marijuana, and a chainsaw.
Terracciano said passengers can go online at MTA.com and fill out a form to try and locate their possessions.
Metro-North riders can find their lost items at Grand Central Station.
