Texas Woman Killed By Police In Her Home

A 28-year-old Black woman was fatally shot in her home by a Fort Worth police officer early Saturday morning - and what let to the shooting is as shocking as the shooting itself. Apparently, a neighbor of Atatiana Koquice Jefferson was concerned seeing her front door open and the lights on just after 2am. He called the non-emergency police line asking for a welfare check.

The officer fired into a bedroom window when he saw movement. The department has released body camera footage of the shooting, which show officers arriving, walking around the perimeter of the residence...and ultimately firing through a window as one yells, “Put your hands up! Show me your hands!” He never identifies himself as a police officer.

The officer who shot Jefferson was not named by the police statement but they did say that he is a “white male who has been with the department since April of 2018.” The unnamed officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.

In a statement, the department says, “Perceiving a threat the officer drew his duty weapon and fired one shot striking the person inside the residence." Jefferson was a pre-med university graduate who worked in pharmaceutical equipment sales. She was simply standing in her bedroom when the shots were fired.
