Twenty-eight dogs were saved by the NYPD's Animal Cruelty Investigation Squad after a dogfighting ring that spanned from Manhattan to Long Island was busted up.
NYPD Chief Dermot Shea said the large-scale animal cruelty investigation included members of the ASPCA and the NYPD's Grand Larceny Division raided two locations Thursday and found 28 pit bulls living in locked cages.
Police sources told the New York Post that they arrested one man in the raid that took place in Washington Heights and another suspect was arrested in Uniondale, Long Island. The source added that more arrests are expected.
A spokesperson from the ASPCA said the majority of the dogs appeared to be malnourished and some bore scars and wounds from fighting. The dogs were transported to animal shelters for complete medical evaluations.
