You would think after winning 103 regular seasons games, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone wouldn’t want to change anything in the postseason.
Which is why the only change he made was not changing anything.
Because, after beating the twins 10-4 in the opening game of the ALDS on Friday for the first time all season, Boone used an identical lineup for a second straight game.
And he got the same result, another huge win as the Yankees pummeled the Twins 8-2 and extended a pair of Minnesota’s dubious MLB records—dropping their 15th straight postseason game and 12th in a row to same opponent. The 12 losses to the Yankees is the longest postseason skid for one club against another in major league history, topping Boston's dominance over the Angels from 1986-2008. Minnesota hasn't won a playoff game since Johan Santana bested the Yankees in their 2004 Division Series opener—exactly 15 years ago.
And at the center of it on Saturday was Didi Gregorius who hit this slump-busting grand slam during a seven-run third inning as the Yankees opened up a 2-0 lead in their AL Division Series.
Boone had predicted that if Gregorius could just find a hole, big hits might follow. Sure enough, Gregorius squibbed an infield single in his first at-bat before lifting his homer into the second deck in right field.
He didn’t find a hole, he ripped one open in the stratosphere with that shot.
