New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer has sounded the alarm on the empty retail space in NYC after a report showed it has nearly double of the past ten years.
According to an article published in the New York Post, Stringer said, "This is not sustainable. We have a crisis and this crisis needs to be managed."
Stringer went on to blame the "Amazon effect" and "burdensome regulatory hurdles" for the downfall of brick and mortar stores in the city. Stringer suggested that the city make the business permit process easier and give tax breaks to businesses that open in high vacancy areas.
The City Comptroller added that he was glad that Mayor de Blasio was back running the city on a daily basis.
"I want him to come back and govern the hell out of this city," he said. "We want our mayor to come and lead, that's why he's the mayor."
