Kosciuszko Bridge To Open This Week

The second span of the new Kosciuszko Bridge will open this week, four years ahead of schedule.

Construction began in 2014 and wasn’t supposed to be finished until 2023. That timeline was previously accelerated to 2020, but is now complete even earlier and on budget.

The bridge connecting Brooklyn and Queens will open to traffic before the Thursday morning rush.A walkway and bikeway will open at noon on Wednesday.

"With the opening of the second span of the new Kosciuszko Bridge on Wednesday, we will once again demonstrate to the nation that it's possible to take on big projects and to get them done on time and on budget," Governor Andrew Cuomo said.

The bridge replaces the existing Kosciuszko Bridge, which opened in 1939. The new bridge will have five lanes of traffic heading to Queens and four lanes to Brooklyn. There is also a 20-foot walkway and bikeway.

Phase One of the bridge was completed in April 2017.
