The latest battle between Mayor Bill de Blasio and Governor Governor Cuomo is centered on Di Fara Pizza in Brooklyn.
State officials closed the pizzeria on Tuesday because of nearly $167,000 in unpaid taxes.
“Di Fara is THE best pizza place in New York City. It MUST be saved.I’m ready to do anything I can to get them reopened - as are thousands of New York City pizza-lovers,” Mayor de Blasio tweeted. “My team and I are looking into how we can help resolve the situation.
Governor Cuomo was asked about the situation and said the mayor can’t make the debt go away.
“He has no legal authority to forgive state taxes. Now, if he wants to pay the $200,000 on behalf of the pizza place he can do that. That’s fine and if he wants to get $200,000 worth of pizza, that’s his business, but he can’t forgive states taxes. He has no legal authority to do that,” Cuomo said.
The governor said he wouldn’t forgive state taxes and it’s unclear exactly how de Blasio planned to help Di Fara reopen.
“I’m not going to pay $200,000 for their pizza, even if it’s really good pizza,” Cuomo said.
