It’s possible that hundreds of lawsuits could be filed on Wednesday, as New York’s Child Victims Act takes effect.
It gives victims of sex abuse as children one year to sue, regardless of how long ago the abuse took place.
"This bill brings justice to people who were abused, and rights the wrongs that went unacknowledged and unpunished for too long,” Cuomo said in a statement after signing the bill into law earlier this year.
Previously, lawsuits had to be brought within three years of the victim’s 18th birthday.
“By signing this bill, we are saying nobody is above the law, that the cloak of authority is not impenetrable, and that if you violate the law, we will find out and you will be punished and justice will be done,” Cuomo said.
