Elderly residents of the apartment building at 40-66 Ithaca Street in Queens are not happy about the lone elevator of the building being shut down for the next four months and they've let the City Department of Buildings know it.
The 66-unit pre-war building is home to a large number of senior citizens who have trouble navigating stairs without assistance and are worried about taking care of their everyday activities.
Farida Ghani, 75, has lived in the building for over a decade.
"I use a walker and live on the fifth floor. My neurologist has given the management a letter that says I could fall and hurt my head if I take the stairs," Ghani told the New York Post. "It shouldn't take four months to fix one elevator."
Ken Fisher, a lawyer for the building's owner, said tenants have known about the repairs for over a month and the management group is doing everything it can to get the work done with the least amount of inconvenience for the tenants.
