Another MTA bus driver was assaulted by an unruly passenger after the driver told him he couldn't bring his full-size bicycle on the bus. According to witnesses, the suspect started screaming at the driver then pulled a bottle from his pocket and threw the liquid in the driver's face before fleeing the scene.
Transit Workers United President Tony Utano released a statement that said, "This is not an isolated incident. This type of abuse of transit workers happens all the time throughout the bus and subway system. Last week, alone a passenger spit in the face of three transit workers in one day."
Utano added, "More and more, our members are suffering these indignities. It has to stop…it not only impacts workers safety, but it is a serious public safety hazard and it impacts service. We need more police presence on buses and trains."
According to a story on CBS 2 the driver was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital to be treated for minor irritation to his mouth and eyes.
