JetBlue started its Soar with Reading program to get books in the hands of kids who need them most. This summer, the airline’s initiative is putting six vending machines stocked with free books around New York City’s five boroughs in neighborhoods where the ability to buy age-appropriate books is limited.
The machines will be restocked every two weeks with new titles and will have options in both English and Spanish. They will also include some books for adults, because research shows that when parents are readers, it has a positive effect on kids’ education.
“It’s so important to keep our kids entertained and engaged in learning while school is out during the summer,” explains Queens Borough President Melinda Katz. “In Queens, we’re thrilled to welcome two free book machines that will be dispensing titles that are appropriate for all ages and reflect the incredible diversity of our borough.”
